More Moving Today

The permanent furniture is arriving for the Reference, Electronic Library Services, Worldwide Document Delivery, and Interlibrary Loan departments this afternoon. Computers will be dismantled, old furniture will be moved out, and new furniture will be installed, so there will be some service interruptions. We are hoping to return to full functionality by tomorrow afternoon!

Moving, Phase II

The Electronic Library Services, Interlibrary Loan, and Worldwide Document Delivery departments have begun moving into their new offices in order to make room for Alumni Services to move into the back of the library. The furniture has not arrived yet, so everyone is making do with temporary furniture, partially connected workstations, and everything else in moving bins! We're trying not to let that interfere with our work, but there may be some small delays with Interlibrary Loan requests and research requests to Worldwide Reference until everything is in place.

Two of the Worldwide Document Delivery scanning stations are up and running, and our student assistants are busy scanning already.

The Reference Department now has a door, but it's not attached to anything.

The Electronic Services Librarian has one computer hooked up, and is searching for a temporary table for the other two test computers.

The Interlibrary Loan Department's belongings are still in bins.

The photocopy paper has been moved, but the photocopier hasn't.

New Table Arrangement

The tables in the main study area on the first floor of the library have been rearranged. They were in a 'cafeteria-style' format before, and now they are in a more open arrangement that allows different types of groupings.

Moving Along

The library staff have been busy rearranging the study carrels other furniture around the new study rooms to provide more places to sit (or lie down) and study.

The new staff conference room is almost complete except for some lighting issues, and the new offices for Electronic Library Services and Interlibrary Loan now have doors and they are getting painted today.

The Reference Department Has Moved

The Reference Department is now officially working out of its new office space, and construction continues on the new Electronic Library Services and Interlibrary Loan department spaces.

Not only do we have a door, but we also have a sign.

A new door is going in across from the Library Instruction Room.

Walls Up in the ELS/ILL Offices

The walls for the new Interlibrary Loan and Electronic Library Services departments have been framed out and the drywall has been put up!

The Staff Move Has Begun

Phase One of the staff move has commenced. The Reference Department staff are moving to the offices that were the old study rooms so that they will all be working in the same part of the building. A new door to separate the staff area from the public area has been installed...

... and the Reference Librarians are doing their best to work in their new offices with temporary furniture and everything in crates until the permanent furniture is installed in a few weeks.

The old Reference Suite is now being converted into offices for the Electronic Library Services and Interlibrary Loan Departments. Once that office is completed, these departments will move from the northwest corner of the building and Alumni Services will take over that space.

The old staff meeting room had to be converted into workspace for the Worldwide Document Delivery department, so a storage room is being cleaned out and repainted to be our new meeting room.

Concrete and Doorframes

The crew has prepared the ground and begun pouring the concrete for the new patio that will be outside the new Alumni Services office in the back of the library.

And another crew is busy working on altering the configuration of the old study rooms on the southwest side of the library to become library staff offices. These offices will accommodate the library staff that currently work in the area where the new Alumni Services offices will be.

Schedule Study Rooms In Advance

If you've tried to use the study rooms so far this year, you've probably noticed that they're frequently in use. To make sure that you have a study room when you need it, especially when you are planning for a group study session, choose a study room and sign up in advance on the paper attached to the door. You can sign up several days in advance, and you can sign up for two hours per day.

The New Study Rooms Are Open

The new study rooms on all three floors are now open and have been in constant use all day. On the door of each study room there is a sign-up sheet so that you can plan ahead and schedule time for your study group for a specific room.

Hoping for an Empty Room

The hall to the old study rooms has been blocked off for additional construction, but access to the Media Services window is still available.

New Study Rooms Should Open Tomorrow

The furniture is being moved into the new study rooms today and whiteboards are being hung. The final inspections (electrical, mechanical, and structural) are scheduled for today, so if all goes well then the new study rooms will open tomorrow (Tuesday, September 29)!

We have paint! And windows for our doors!

The painters were busy today, and the new study rooms look great. Some touch-up painting and the addition of trim still need to be completed. Work will take place over the weekend.

The upstairs walls are painted to match the the current paint scheme. The interiors are a soft beige.

The window glass for the doors was delivered today and will be installed over the weekend.

Next week, the old study rooms in the back will be closed so that remodeling can start. The new study rooms will be open for business sometime next week.

We Have Doors!

The study room doors have been hung, trim is being attached, and painting is being completed. There's not far to go before they are complete and ready to use for group study.

Painting the Study Rooms

The big black plastic curtain on the first floor...

is hiding the fact that the painting of the study rooms has begun!

The second floor study rooms have also been painted:

And the third floor study rooms are just getting started:

Doors, Doors, and More Doors

The doors for the new study rooms have been stained (and are looking quite pretty!) and the construction crew is finishing off the drywall taping on the first floor.

Drywall Progress

Today, the drywall was taped up and finished on the second and third floors.

Construction workers draped tarp around the first floor rooms.

The new study room doors will be finished this weekend. If all goes well, the study rooms should be finished by the end of the month.

Work Resumes Tomorrow

Progress slowed a bit due to required inspections. But everything checked out okay, and construction will resume on Friday, September 18, continuing through the weekend to make up for lost time. Expect the dry wall to be finished and the doors shown below to be painted and hung soon.

Moving Along...

Construction hasn't visibly progressed much since Friday's post, but here's another photo of the new rooms on the second floor.

Study Room Walls Up

The study rooms are really starting to take shape! The sheetrock is up on the study room walls on the first and second floors, and the third floor construction area has been closed off with heavy plastic sheeting to prevent construction dust from flying everywhere.

Study Room Construction Upstairs

The construction crew has prepped the second and third floor spaces to begin construction on the new study rooms upstairs in the northeast corner of the building. The furniture from those areas has been shifted to other spots around the building until the work is complete, so you may find study carrels in odd places for the next few weeks!

Looking for more places to study?

If the first floor is too crowded, head on up to the second and third floors. The third floor is a designated quiet study area, and the construction crews are doing their best to keep the noise to a minimum while the new study rooms are being built. There are stairs and an elevator right next to the atrium, and wi-fi is available throughout the entire building.
